There is a critical shortage of black blood donors!!!

Sickle cell disease, which is particularly prevalent in people of Black heritage, is the fastest-growing inherited blood disorder in the UK. It is a painful, debilitating disease which affects red blood cells, causing them to have a sickle shape, which can lead to stroke, organ damage and death.

Certain blood types, like the Ro subtype, are more common in people of Black heritage and are vital for treating sickle cell disease.

Patients often need blood that is closely matched to their own, a shortage of black donors means they may not get the best, safest transfusion, increasing their risk of life-threatening reactions.

12,000 more donors of Black heritage are urgently needed to meet this growing demand.

Have a Donor ID – New donors must sign up at www.blood.co.uk first to get their ID – which is required to complete your booking form

Check eligibility - https://my.blood.co.uk/eligibility/check - recent piercings, tattoos, or infections may mean waiting a while.

Travel eligibility check - https://my.blood.co.uk/eligibility/travel - some countries like Ghana/Nigeria require you to wait 4-6 months after your return before giving blood.
